Communion

The Lord's Supper - "For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, 'This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, asoften as you drink it, in remembrance of Me" (I Corinthians 11:23-25)

What is Communion all about?

We should be thankful to serve a God who understands our weaknesses. One of these weaknesses is the tendency to forget. We forget His goodness and kindness to us so easily, so He does things to help us remember Him. For instance, He puts rainbows in the sky and insists that His people set up monuments of remembrance. When He rescued the Israelites from Egypt through the angel of death, He changed the first month of the Hebrew year and established Passover, so that they would always remember His great deliverance.

So it should come as no surprise that when God sent His Son to earth and then eventually to the cross, He insisted on having a way that His people would always remember what was the greatest act of deliverance. Communion, or the Lord's Supper, is the memorial act that Jesus established in order that His people would always remember how He died for their sins on the cross. Therefore, communion must never become just a "religious rite". It is a holy and precious time for the people of God to gather and remember how they were cleansed from their sins by Jesus' great sacrifice.

There are many different ways that communion is practiced in various churches and denominations. At Edgewood, we celebrate communion once a month during our regular worship services, and occasionally at special worship services. Anyone who has placed their faith in Christ alone for salvation is welcome to participate in the Lord's Supper (communion), regardless of your church affiliation. As we do, may we remember that true life is only found in Jesus.
